And we just love this! Certified Naturally Grown farms and apiaries are committed to the highest ideals of sustainable agriculture. They are great folks, and we are proud to qualify as one of their "poster farmers!" #YayUs

Our Spring CSA is full and we are crowing our thanks over here on the farm. We're so excited to get this party started on April 1st (and that's no April Fool's joke, either)! Thank you to every one of you who supports us in our heritage farming endeavors. It means a lot! #PKF #PKFCSA #Cockadoodledoo
Guess who is Capon Bridge Middle School's official local farmer for the 2019-20 school year? Yup...Powder Keg Farms! We'll be delivering wholesome food their 300-strong student body can enjoy and feel good about! While we may begin delivering a few things this spring, real production will commence in August with the new school year. We are over the moon about helping these young students eat quality food that's good for brain power, building muscles and growing humans! #GoPKF #GoBobcats
Yup...it's an 8x18-foot refrigerator, all the better to serve you with, my dears! Brian even made a nifty sled to haul it where it needed to go because he's innovative and resourceful like that. So much expansion this week! #Brrr #FarmLife #PKFCSA
This week's CSA shareholders are getting some fresh, homemade pasta made with our wholesome eggs, caramelized onions and eggplant tomatoes that we preserved last summer. We are making everyone happy by creating separate varieties using organic King Arthur flour, Pamela's gluten-free flour and even a spelt flour version. No one is getting left behind the pasta train! These old-fashioned, wide egg noodles will surely please and are a simple tasty combination of flour, eggs, Himalayan sea salt and olive oil. Mangia! #PowderKegFarms #PastaLoversUnite #GiniInTheKitchen
Paul, who is like a second son to us, took these lovely photos of our farm while spending a day helping us harvest, wash and bag arugula and spinach last week. We’ve known Paul since he was about 12 years old, and it’s been our privilege watching him grow into the wonderful man he is now. We always appreciate his help and spending time together. Thanks for the great pictures, Paul—and for being an awesome helper! #ItTakesaVillage #PKF #WinterCSA
Last week, as bitter temperatures continued knocking on our doors, we filled the kitchen with the soothing aroma of butter and sugar melting on the stove with plump peanuts. Yup...we made copious amounts of peanut brittle for Powder Keg Farm's CSA baskets. On hand to help was longtime friend Rosy, whose recipe we used. Nothing wrong with balancing out the bitter with the sweet, and oh, how sweet it is! Peanut brittle is the kind of delicious treat that lasts, since a little goes a long way! #eatyoursweets #eatsaladtoo #staywarm #pkf #pkfcsa
The news of the day is cold. Really cold. Really, Really Freaking Cold. Last night, the temp was 22 degrees (but felt like -20) with a wind advisory. No biggie. With the partial sun, the unheated high tunnel was stable at 50 degrees. It’s what was going to happen last night that was the real gamechanger and had us biting our nails and eating Girl Scout cookies. A low of 7. SEVEN. And knowing today’s high was forecast to be 17 with a 4-degree night—and more 40 mph wind gusts—we knew we needed to prepare.
We supported the single layer of plastic on the tunnel with two-layer poly low-tunnels we constructed. We added all the extra blankets from the house and propane and diesel heaters were at the ready. By morning, it was 2 degrees outside and 27 in the greenhouse. But temps hit 68 in the high tunnel today even though it was only 9 degrees outside. WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT, FOLKS! Gotta love Mother Nature. And friends—a very special thanks to our kind friends Bill and Julie, who pitched in to help us prepare! |
