The news of the day is cold. Really cold. Really, Really Freaking Cold. Last night, the temp was 22 degrees (but felt like -20) with a wind advisory. No biggie. With the partial sun, the unheated high tunnel was stable at 50 degrees. It’s what was going to happen last night that was the real gamechanger and had us biting our nails and eating Girl Scout cookies. A low of 7. SEVEN. And knowing today’s high was forecast to be 17 with a 4-degree night—and more 40 mph wind gusts—we knew we needed to prepare.
We supported the single layer of plastic on the tunnel with two-layer poly low-tunnels we constructed. We added all the extra blankets from the house and propane and diesel heaters were at the ready. By morning, it was 2 degrees outside and 27 in the greenhouse. But temps hit 68 in the high tunnel today even though it was only 9 degrees outside. WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT, FOLKS! Gotta love Mother Nature. And friends—a very special thanks to our kind friends Bill and Julie, who pitched in to help us prepare!
